Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

What is SEO?

In the broadest sense "Search Engine Optimisation" describes the technique of creating or modifying web pages so that they are:
   found by search engines;
   load quickly (particularly the first page people enter your site on); and
   achieve the best possible ranking within search engine results pages.
At bpresent we always create your web site with this in mind. If you already have a web site and you're concerned about your site's rankings please read on.
Feel free to send us details about your site for a no-obligation appraisal of how we may be able to help boost your results.

Why do I need optimised pages?

Put simply, so that people will find your web site when they do a search on the web.
The bigger picture answer is, so that search engine robots (or crawlers) will find your web site and display your web site as close to the top of the results page as possible.
Having a web site that is found naturally by search engines (and therefore people) is perhaps as important as any other promotional activity you may embark on.
Good technical design of websites ensures that you receive excellent results in search engines at no additional cost.
This is fundamental to the success of a web site for a small business with limited budget.

Surely all website designers provide optimised pages?

Sad to say, this is the most common failing of most website designers and developers when it comes to small businesses. Many designers create very impressive work using graphics programs. There is definitely a place for this kind of work, but arguably it is not at the expense of having your page load quickly.
Graphics in the most basic form (eg. photographs) load considerably slower than raw text.
More elaborate forms of graphics (eg. "Flash" animations) often require the user to download a special piece of software (a 'plugin') in order to be viewed. Many people don't want to download this software or do not have the time, especially if they are on dial-up connections.
At bpresent we have thoroughly researched this area of design (as well as other aspects of SEO) and continue to do so, on a regular basis, through a variety of professional forums as well as the greatest teacher of them all - experience.
When it comes to the needs of small business, it's essential to find a mix between an appropriate level of graphics and text.

What does bpresent do to optimise my website?

We attempt to create websites that are attractive to both humans and robots.
One of the main challenges of SEO is that different search engines use different criteria (algorithms) to rank web sites. Another is that they change their ranking algorithms from time to time, experimenting and changing, sometimes quite frequently.
A website designed by bpresent is optimised using low-risk search engine friendly techniques. We have found that the technique of constantly changing websites in line with the latest theories is self defeating, not to mention time consuming and therefore, in most cases, expensive.
Our approach is to create pages designed primarily for humans but with tried and true (simple) search engine optimisation techniques in mind.
This ensures that the major search engines will:
   find your web pages;
   rank them highly; and
   not penalise your web site for using unethical / unfair techniques.
For more information about design and content considerations please refer to our online tutorial.

Is there anything I can do to help?

Yes, absolutely! A good way to increase visitors to your site is to culitivate relationships with colleagues and businesses up and down your supply chain.
Having links from your web pages to other websites and vice versa increases your visibility to both humans and robots.
You can help by identifying those organisations that you believe will be open to cross promotion.
